Marco Fabi was born in Rome, Italy in 1977. He was raised in a family dedicated to a constant and profound contact with music. He displayed an early attraction to the guitar, with which he gave life to his early experiments with song composition.
From the ages of 16 to 20 Marco began defining a personal style, sparked by a search for unconventional sounds and harmonies. Meanwhile, his voice directed his songs toward moments of fundamentally intimate expression.
Initially, Marco found an attraction to writing and performing songs in English. A passion for the Beatles, the new acoustic sensibilities of Damien Rice, Turin Brakes, Kings of Convenience, the explosive creativity and virtuosity of Dave Matthews, Tori Amos and Ben Harper added to the spirituality of Bob Marley proved strong enough to drive him towards such an expressive solution. A passion for Ani Di Franco lead him to play the acoustic guitar in an extremely rhythmic, syncopated percussive style which – added to his alternate turnings – further accentuated the harmonic peculiarities of his compositions.
On September 11, 2002 Marco participated in a television special on RAI2 Italian RadioTelevision (“Naples calls New York”) where he presented one of his most suggestive English composition, “The day the ground was fiery steel”, dedicated to the tragedy of the Twin Towers.
In 2003 his songs attracted the attention of renowned English producer Jon Jacobs (among others Paul McCartney, and Elvis Costello), with whom he experimented with his single “Far from you”/”The glassy hill”.
Between 2004 and 2005 Marco dedicated himself to transforming what had thus far been a primarily English lyrical affinity. He wrote all of his new songs in Italian, without ever compromising his international tendencies in melody and arrangement.
Many of these songs were included in his first CD, “La Scelta”, released in 2005 – produced by Indie label Wing S.r.l. and distributed by Edel Italia.
The album is an original mix of delicate, introspective and intimate songwriting met with a natural originality, expressed in a sophisticated pop-rock context. It gained notable critical acclaim, earning the following awards for 2006:
Critic’s Choice Award / Musica e Dischi “Debut Album”
PremioCiampo / “Best debut album” of the year
3rd place / TargaTenco “Debut Album”
Listening to the 12 tracks of “La Scelta” is enough to understand the care with which Marco Fabi cultivated his songs: in addition to his role as composer-instrumentalist-performer, Marco dedicated himself to the arrangement and production of the album. In overseeing every aspect of the album’s production, he was able to create an entirely uncompromised work characterized by:
- An essentially simple conception of song forms (revolving around voice/guitar), added to a study and refinement of compositional techniques in line with international songwriters.
- A knowledgeable and balanced use of strings, electronic inserts and guitar riffs suggesting a profound knowledge of and propensity for the international pop-rock sound.
Since early 2009 Marco Fabi has been working on the production of his second album, with an anticipated release date of late October 2009. This album will see him working with special guests such as QUINTORIGO (bass, cello, violin and tenor sax), to whom he entrusted the arrangements for his song “Solo le nuvole”. The song was released promotionally in late May 2009, and has received much positive attention from media within the sector.
Marco Fabi has been performing live since March of 1999, in a wide range of venues within Italy’s live circuit. He has been a constant figure in the ‘Roman circuit’, whose venues (among them Big Mama, Il Locale, The Place) have launched numerous successful artists from Rome into the national circuits.
He has participated in numerous national festivals, including: AREZZO WAVE (2000), ENZIMI (2001), ROCK TARGATO ITALIA (which he won in 2001).
Following the release of his album “La Scelta” (2005-2006) Marco increased his activity on the live circuit, without ever compromising the quality or sincerity of his performances. He played in FNAC locations across Italy, participated in Generazione X (Renzo Piano’s Auditorium, Rome), at the Mantova Music Festival, at the Salone del Libro in Turin, at Arezzo Wave on the Psycho Stage, and at RockFiles (Lifegate) at the Salumeria della Musica, in Milan.
At The Place, in Rome, he opened for the historic international acoustic duo, Tuck & Patti.
During 2007 and 2008 Marco experimented with various formations – solo, duet, trio, full band – while opening for artists such as Simone Cristicchi, Max Gazze, Paola Turci, and Marina Rei.
In 2009 Marco participated in “Repubblica Roma Rock” festival, dedicated to songs d’auteur – which was held in Renzo Piano’s Auditorium in Rome. He has also toured with his current band, presenting new songs such as “Solo le nuvole”, which can be found on his upcoming album – scheduled for release in October 2009.
Accompanying Marco Fabi will be talented violinist Andrea Di Cesare. Beyond having been featured on Marco’s debut album La Scelta - performing with the artist in numerous venues across Italy - Di Cesare has established himself as one of the country’s most sought after session violinists, working with such notable artists as: Carmen Consoli, Negroamaro, and Ron.
